Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
There are a lot of similarities between dental insurance and standard health insurance, but the main difference comes down to one word—prevention. While health insurance is designed to help you get treatment for a problem that has already developed, dental insurance is geared more toward stopping minor oral health issues before they ever occur. That’s why (as you’ll see in the next section) services like checkups and cleanings tend to receive more coverage than fillings or crowns.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
While we can’t tell you exactly what your dental insurance plan covers without talking to you first, your benefits probably look very similar to this:
- Preventive services are covered 80-100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays)
- Restorative services are covered 50-70% (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures)
- Cosmetic services are elective, so they are usually NOT covered (veneers, whitening)
So, if you want to spend little to nothing out-of-pocket at the dentist, the best thing you can do is keep up with your two recommended checkups and cleanings each year.
