Dental crowns are one of the most versatile dental procedures out there, capable of being used for both restorative and aesthetic reasons. It’s no surprise then that they’re also used incredibly often.

However, in part because of their ubiquity, most of the resources online may assume that you understand everything that there is to know about the treatment. This is a little bit of a problem considering that preparing your teeth for dental crowns can be a little bit of an involved process.

Here’s what you should know about the process of obtaining dental crowns, and how your teeth are likely to be prepared.

How are the Teeth Prepared for Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are designed to slip easily onto the teeth, but they aren’t thin enough that you can place them on just any tooth without any alterations. For that reason, your dentist will need to remove a portion of your enamel in order to make room.

Your dental crown will be able to protect the tooth once the enamel has been removed, meaning that it won’t be a problem in the long run. Your mouth will also be anesthetized completely before the enamel is removed, meaning that you don’t have to worry about discomfort associated with the procedure.

Dental Crowns Advantages and Disadvantages

Dental crowns are great for people who are dealing with substantial decay damage to a tooth, particularly in cases where fillings aren’t going to be enough. However, the fact that some amount of healthy enamel needs to be removed for them to be placed is something to consider, especially if you want to use the treatment for purely aesthetic reasons.

This is something that conservative dentists would typically recommend against unless the benefits outweigh the costs. After all, enamel doesn’t grow back on its own.

That said, dentists don’t recommend dental crowns frivolously. If yours tells you that they think that a dental crown is a necessity, you should embrace them and reap the benefits of what they have to offer.
