What is the Difference Between a Dental Crown and a Filling?

Woman has questioning expression

Dental crowns and fillings are both used to restore damaged teeth and help smiles look beautiful once more, but there is a world of difference between them. While a filling consists of material replacing tooth structure removed due to damage or decay, a crown is a recreation of the missing section of a tooth cemented on top of the remaining part. Read on to find out more about the difference and why one might be used over the other.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are designed to strongly resemble natural teeth and can usually be placed after two quick appointments. They can often be used for aesthetic purposes by covering discolored or misshapen teeth. They are also often used for teeth that are severely damaged and beyond being able to function on their own.

A crack in a tooth will not heal naturally, so a crown might be used to hold the tooth together and prevent further breakdown. If a tooth needs an especially large filling, the pressure of biting could damage the tooth by driving that filling deeper into the tooth like a wedge. In cases like these, a crown might be the better option because it would evenly bear the whole pressure of the bite.

Dental Fillings

A filling is for minor repairs like sealing off the part of the tooth damaged by decay after the compromised tissue is removed. A filling might be recommended if the tooth has no cracks and is still strong enough to chew on its own.

Fillings are more inexpensive than crowns and can be done in a single visit. However, if a tooth needs a crown, insufficient repairs can cost more in the long run.

Which Option Is Best for Me? Talk to Your Dentist

If you have a compromised tooth in need of a fix, be sure to discuss the matter with your dentist. A qualified dental professional will be able to conduct either of these treatments and knows exactly what makes one medically more appropriate than the other. After all, a dentist spends a great deal of time in school in order to know the right way to fix a tooth.
