Feel a bit unsure or confused while talking to your dentist about dental implants in North Grafton? You’re not alone. Many of these terms are ones you may have never heard before, and unless you’ve attended dental school or performed previous research, it’s likely they mean nothing without a bit of explanation. Fortunately, this article will discuss various dental implant terms you can become more familiar with before your next appointment.

What Certain Terms Mean

During your initial consultation, there is a good chance you may say, “Excuse me, what is that you’re referring to?” This is completely normal, but if you want to walk in better prepared, it’s time to dive into a brief lesson on what certain dental implant terms mean.

Abutment: This is the metal connector that attaches to the top of your dental implant after you’ve fully recovered from your oral surgery. It connects to your customized restoration when placed.

Abutment Teeth: These are the teeth used to support and anchor a traditional fixed bridge or partial denture placement.

Ceramic: This type of material is used to create dental implants. Made of clay, it offers a more natural look, allowing for a more pleasing aesthetic. These are also great for individuals who have metal sensitivities.

Crown: Also referred to as a “cap,” a crown is a restoration that mimics the visible part of a tooth. Designed to replace a single missing tooth, it normally fits over a weakened tooth; however, with dental implants, it is secured to the top or abutment to complete a person’s smile.

Dentures: Dentures are a traditional tooth replacement option that is offered as a partial or full denture. Partials replace multiple missing teeth and use metal clasps attached to abutment teeth, whereas full dentures rely on your natural suction to hold them in place on top of your gums. Implant dentures, however, are held in place by 4-8 dental implants that are surgically placed into your jawbone.

Endosteal Implants: Endosteal stands for “in the bone,” which means it is the most popular form of dental implant available. Not only is it surgically placed into the jawbone, but it uses screws, cylinders, or blades and holds one artificial tooth.

Eposteal Implants: Eposteal stands for “on the bone.”This particular method of very rare and not commonly used by implant dentists, as it carries much risk. However, if an individual has rapid bone resorption, it is possible to put an eposteal implant in place.

Implant: A dental implant is a small post that is surgically placed into your jawbone and supports your customized restoration (i.e., dental crown, bridge, denture). Implants are known to fuse with bone quite easily but require several months for the process to be complete.

Osseointegration: Osseointegration must occur during the recovery phase of your treatment. It takes time for your implant to fuse with the bone and surrounding tissues, which is why you are required to spend at least 3-6 months waiting to move forward with your dental implant treatment.

Subperiosteal Implant: This type of implant sits on top of the jaw and is only typically recommended if an individual doesn’t have enough jawbone or is unable to wear traditional dentures.

Titanium: The most common material used to create dental implants is titanium. Known for its ability to fuse with bone, it is lightweight, yet very strong, allowing for a firm and solid foundation to support your custom restoration. Titanium can also last decades or even a lifetime as long as it’s properly cared for.

Zirconia: If you are allergic to titanium for any reason, you can request a zirconia dental implant. This type of prosthetic doesn’t require a connection like titanium (abutment) and can blend in easier than other materials used to create dental implants.

Now that you have more information about your dental implants, embrace that added confidence when preparing to see your dentist for your upcoming consultation.
