Dental Checkups & Cleanings for Kids

Most children should start attending regular checkups and cleanings around age 2. At these appointments, we’ll examine your child’s mouth, clean their teeth, and discuss the basics of oral health so they can start to form good habits as soon as possible. We’ll also answer any questions you might have about your child’s smile so you can safeguard their dental development between appointments.

Dental Sealants

A child’s back teeth are especially vulnerable to cavities because their deep grooves easily accumulate plaque and bacteria, plus little hands often have a tough time adequately cleaning them while brushing. Fortunately, we can cover these teeth with a thin, clear layer of dental plastic. This effectively seals the teeth and prevents food particles and other decay-causing factors from settling on the enamel, preventing the onset of cavities.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is helpful for patients of all ages, as it makes the teeth more resistant to decay, but it is especially useful for children because it can aid in the development of their adult teeth even before they come in. That’s why we recommend that every child use a fluoridated toothpaste at home and get concentrated fluoride treatments with us. We’ll simply apply a fluoride gel during their cleanings to give them an extra boost of cavity protection.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Despite everyone’s best efforts, it’s not uncommon for a child to develop a cavity. Thankfully, should your little one end up with a “sugar bug,” you can count on our team to skip the lecture and simply offer a solution. A tooth-colored filling allows us to remove the decayed enamel and replace it with a composite resin that is specially-shaded to match your child’s tooth, creating a restoration that won’t stick out in your child’s smile.

Athletic Mouthguards

Sports offer an innumerable amount of benefits for children, but every activity comes with an inherent risk of dental injury. Rather than having your child wear an uncomfortable, one-size-fits-all appliance from the store (that they will inevitably “forget”), we can give them a custom-made guard. This will be designed to fit over their unique teeth, creating a secure fit while offering unmatched protection, allowing you to breathe a little easier on the sidelines.

Lip & Tongue-Tie (Frenectomy)

Does your child have difficulty eating, speaking, or breathing because of a lip or tongue tie? These common conditions stem from a piece of tissue restricting the movement of the lips or tongue, and particularly for infants, they can make feeding virtually impossible. We can take care of these issues quickly and painlessly using our Biolase soft tissue laser. It allows us to loosen or snip unneeded tissue without using incisions or causing any bleeding, making it easy for even the youngest patient to remain comfortable.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

While fluoride is excellent for preventing cavities, silver diamine fluoride is designed to stop cavities that have already developed. Applied to a decaying tooth, the silver instantly kills the harmful bacteria, while the fluoride works to strengthen and preserve the remaining enamel. It offers a fast, drill-free way to take care of cavities, plus it can provide relief from extreme dental sensitivity as well.
